Medical Genetics

Medical Genetics is a branch of medicine concerned with the study of genes, genetic variation, and heredity, and as such involves the diagnosis and management of hereditary disorders. It focuses on the diagnosis, management, and counselling of people with genetic disorders and their family members. Genetic medicine is a newer term for medical genetics and incorporates areas such as gene therapy, personalized medicine, and the rapidly emerging new medical specialty, predictive medicine.

Identifying a genetic abnormality allows tailoring of clinical follow up and screening programs for patients and family members, to achieve timely diagnosis and treatment, and counselling for patients and family members to understand the implications of carrying a genetic abnormality.
